A Reorientation is like a car jam puzzle

Many pieces need to be moved before you can reshape and resettle your world on new bases.

We came across a few people lately, going through painful experiences because they didn’t realize this soon enough. Some waited too long to envisage a reorientation and found themselves stuck in an urgent situation. Others already figured out their new trajectory, but miscalculated the time it takes to implement a new system or didn’t get access to their invested funds when expected.

A reorientation involves Internal and External processes. It takes time to:

  • Integrate new realities
  • Research and analyze options
  • Figure out scenarios
  • Reposition ourselves
  • Align our internal compass
  • Make adjustments in different areas of our lives
  • Devise plans … and backup plans
  • Learn new skills and how things work in a different field
  • Build new tools or an entire business
  • Launch products and services
  • Get results from marketing efforts

Nothing in a reorientation happens in a neat sequence.

The internal process entails defining new priorities which require realignment, possibly involving other people. The shift in focus and new goals call for trade-offs, circumstances impact decisions…. Reassessing where we are at and implementing changes more often than not happens through lots of back and forth within ourselves and with others. There is also the learning process: researching, reflecting, inquiring, attempting, adapting, …

External processes are never so straight forward as they are presented on paper. If you need to deal with legalities, banks, governmental institutions and other public services, expect the unexpected and count on delays … every request, appointment, submission takes time.

Figuring out which pieces need to be moved first to progress faster is not a simple planning exercise. By default a reorientation is a journey difficult to fit into a set timeline.
